Bitter is Better- Amla

As autumn has arrived, there is a sudden burst of cough and cold cases around us. Even in my OPDs, I’m seeing a rise in cases of bronchitis, in both new and old patients. This is because of the double-edged sword of the virus and air pollution, the cost we pay of living in metro cities. As a respiratory physician, I am also observing the rise in cases of bronchitis or asthma cases over the last decade. It could be due to the weakened fighting capacity of our bodies. The reason could be our sedentary lifestyle, food choices, climate changes, and inhaling polluted air.

My Journey with Amla

My personal journey with this bitter wonder fruit traces back 5-6 years when its value first became evident in my life.

It all started when one of my dear staff mentioned amla juice and how its regular use helped his family in reducing coughs and colds frequency. I didn’t think much of it at that time. But later that year, my husband had a surprise asthma attack (he never had asthma before). He had to use inhalers for a while.

Despite being a firm believer in allopathic practices, I decided to add amla to our daily diet. Beyond just the juice, I explored pickling and occasionally taking it in its raw form too but never in the form of murabba. The outcome was astonishing. My husband’s asthma showed no signs of recurrence, and all of us experienced a noticeable reduction in seasonal ailments.

Indian Gooseberry (Amla tree)

For the past 5-6 years, we’ve been having amla in our daily diet in one or the other forms. However, this year, due to a hectic schedule and some laziness, we skipped it. To my surprise, I noticed my husband’s asthma symptoms coming back.

I want to be clear—I’m not saying Amla cures asthma or that you should replace inhalers/medicines with amla juice. But what I’ve personally observed and the literature says is that it does help lessen the severity and frequency of respiratory illnesses.

Amla Juice

Amla’s Health Boosting Properties

  1. An abundant natural reservoir of Vitamin C and has anti-oxidant properties. Regular intake boosts the immune system.
  2. Prevents allergic, viral, and bacterial ailments.
  3. Consuming amla juice on an empty stomach, in particular, has the potential to enhance metabolism, offering benefits for weight management and weight loss endeavors.
  4. By boosting collagen production, it helps in maintaining clear skin and slows down the aging process.
  5. It is beneficial for individuals with diabetes or those susceptible to the condition to maintain balanced blood sugar levels.
  6. It promotes heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart diseases, due to its high fiber content and presence of antioxidants like polyphenols.
  7. It too promotes hair health by strengthening hair follicles, minimizing hair loss, and enhancing the overall quality and texture of hair.
  8. Amla is also a source of vitamin A and hence supports good vision. Consistent intake of amla juice can contribute to improved eye health and lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
  9. Supplementing a gym workout with amla juice reduces muscle soreness, and enhances the retention of protein and nitrogen in the body thereby helping in building muscles.
  10. Due to its high fiber content, it also works as a laxative and prevents constipation.

Watch out for these no-nos:

  1. If you suffer from hyperacidity avoid taking amla in your diet.
  2. Individuals suffering from a blood-related disorder or bleeding disorder should avoid its intake, due to its anti-platelet properties.
  3. If any surgery is planned in the near future should avoid Amla for the time being due to the risk of bleeding.
  4. If you have a dry scalp and skin, better avoid this fruit, it may further increase dryness.
  5. Diabetics while taking Amla should keep a watch on their sugar levels as its intake can drastically drop blood sugar levels.
  6. High temperatures can diminish Amla’s benefits. Store it away from direct sunlight in a cool and dry place.
  7. Amla works best with regular use. Don’t skip doses for optimal results.
  8. More isn’t always better, taking it in moderation should be the key.

“Elevate your well-being with amla. A bite a day, a healthier you in every way.”
